This assignment students will learn about how context, concept and materials all feed in to the deeper meaning of a work of art. Students will draw a context, a concept and a material at random and will create their project from these materials.
Rules:
All three elements the student draws must be used.
Other materials or methodologies of making are allowed to be combined with the project as long as the original 3 elements are used.

Assignment 2: Wood/Metal Vessel
This assignment students will learn how to fabricate objects out of metal and wood. Students will learn technical skills such as lamination, carving, basic joinery, fastners, welding, spot welding, riveting and metal bending. Students will make a work the incorporates both materials as either a singular object or multiple objects. Students will come up with their own concept, contexts and have the option to introduce other materials if it is crucial to the idea.

One form of connection must be used on both wood and metal elements

This assignment students will learn how to fabricate an upright silicon mold with a box mother mold. Students will learn about how to conceptually use the idea of multiples and create a project based off of either a found object or a sculpted form. Students will use castings from their mold in order to create their project.
Similar to the previous projects, other materials may be introduced with this project if it is crucial to the idea.
Rules:
Cast object can be no bigger than 8"x8"x12"
Students must complete 3 test casts in order to be graded on mold performance
Students must at least 1 casting (or a section of a casting) in order to create their project

Assignment 4: The Proposal
This is the final project for beginning sculpture. Students will write a minimum 250 word proposal of what they would like to do for their final project.

Assignment 5: Wrap UpStudents will write about the projects they created in this course to see what reoccurring themes are happening in their work as well as interests in where they would like to their art work to go. This is meant to help students construct the beginning of an artist statement.

Blog Uploads:
In this class students are required to upload in progress images of their projects. Students are expected to work on their projects in addition to class work time. Blog uploads are work 25 points each and will be due at 8am on the dates specified on the syllabus.
Every time a project is due the class will critique the student's work. I expect everyone to actively participate in critiques to give their peers feedback. Students will be graded on critique participation and can earn up to 25 points.
Critiques
MUST be attended!!! If you miss your critique day your final grade for the
class will drop a full letter grade.
If you a critique day on a day you are
not critiquing that day, your project will go down a full letter grade.
Students are expected to document their work throughout the semester and will need to hand in a CD with images for all 4 projects. Images need to be 300dpi. This CD is due by 5/5/14, if I do not receive these, I will not post your grade on elion.
