1st Blog Post- Metal/Wood Chair

For my first blog entry for project two, I have the starting bones to prize pieces I want to incorporate into my wood/metal vessel. On Sunday I made a trip to Big Valley Antiques near Milroy Pa.
Returned from the trip with:
1) A metal dish rack
2) 20 year calendar
3) Bright orange tractor seat

You'll see how I plan to incorporate each piece into my project in a little bit. But first lets look at some inspiration. When researching for my project, I found this photograph of a chair (pictured below.)
I felt very inspired by the skeleture on the back of the chair. It made me think of a chair as something that causes spinal issues with bad posture. But it also made me think of a chair being someone's a chair; a part of them. Somehow I wanted to create a chair that perhaps had life previously or highlight  the "bones" of a chair by creating skelecture throughout the piece.

The dish rack reminded me of the spine and the small basket that lifts up and down reminded me of a head rest. I plan on manipulating the wire and simulating a body. I think this part would be the back rest on the chair.

This is the tractor seat I found. Already the piece has two holes drilled into the black part; I plan on drilling the bottom into a piece of wood.

This is my miscellaneous piece. It is a awesome 20 year calendar. My original thoughts have been to give the artwork a time frame of it's life. Perhaps this marks it's duration as a chair. I'm not sure yet! But it's small and workable. It even stands up; for the purpose of this piece I might end up cutting off the back that holds it up and use that for something else.

Something from my house: broken clothes rack

Something else:

I also have a long 2X8 piece of lumber that I plan on cutting up to put the pieces I bought together. As well as creating legs for the chair. For more metal, I plan on utilizing the spare sheet metal from the shop.

I love that you are experimenting with the body/ chairs and looking for the connections in between! I can't wait to see how these come together when they are constructed!
